This summer, aspiring animators have a unique opportunity to learn directly from the pros. Team Legend Studios co-founders, Thiago Levy and Jonathan Ovalle, will lead an intensive workshop titled Fundamentals for Success in Animation, offering a deep dive into the essential skills and knowledge needed to build a successful career in the animation industry.
From the ground up, this workshop is designed to give both MAGIC students and newcomers a comprehensive look into the real-world demands of the animation pipeline. With decades of combined experience, Levy and Ovalle are passionate about helping the next generation of animators not only strengthen their technical abilities, but also understand their place—and worth—within the industry.
What You’ll Learn
Production Pipelines Demystified
While basic production workflows are often touched on in classrooms, this workshop will go further—breaking down each phase of the animation pipeline to help artists understand how their role fits into the larger picture. Whether you’re focused on design, animation, or storyboarding, this session will help you identify career paths, navigate job roles, and prepare for the studio environment.
Finding the Balance: Quality, Quantity, and Budget
Many early-career artists undervalue their time and talent. This segment focuses on teaching artists how to assess their work, set realistic expectations, and negotiate fair rates when freelancing or working with clients. It’s not about budgeting a film—it’s about valuing yourself as a professional.
Software & Tools: What the Pros Actually Use
Instead of diving deep into any one software, the workshop will provide an overview of the most widely used industry tools, including Toon Boom, Maya, and the Adobe Creative Suite. More importantly, participants will leave with curated learning resources to continue mastering these tools at their own pace. Attendees will also get a hands-on experience with sketching and writing—reinforcing core skills that remain vital, no matter how technology evolves.
Intro to 2D Rigging
Rigging is a core part of modern animation, and this workshop offers a foundational overview of the process. While time won’t allow for in-depth training, students will gain clarity on how it works and where to focus their efforts if they choose to specialize further.
